Beaches near Kolkata
Digha: New Digha and Old Digha offer two very different beach experiences, making Digha the default option for families. Old Digha, being the busier and more commercial one, balances out New Digha with calmer, broader walkways. And when you want a break from lounging on the beach, you can visit the Marine Aquarium and Amarabati Park. The seafood here is super fresh, but we’ll suggest choosing the well-known dhabas by the beach over street food, especially in scorching summer heat.
Mandarmani: Located about 170 km from Kolkata, Mandarmani runs along one of the longest motorable beach stretches in the country and roughly 13 km of hard sand that resorts are directly built against. It's more peaceful than Digha and better suited for a couple's weekend or a small group that wants beach access without the crowd. Shankarpur, an operational fishing port nearby, is worth a short detour if you want to look into the functioning of the local seafood market.
Tajpur: Located between Mandarmani and Shankarpur, it remains noticeably quieter than either of these destinations. Rather than the nightlife of the markets, the main attraction here is the fish ponds, casuarina trees and the red crabs that scatter the moment you approach them. If Digha seems too busy on a long weekend, this is the best alternative option.
Bakkhali: located around 125 km away, is one of the nearer beach choices, serving as a good option for a brief getaway. It's more underdeveloped than Digha, with a crocodile breeding centre and Henry's Island (about ten minutes farther) as its main add-ons. You can expect a raw but less resort-heavy experience here in this location.
Wildlife and Riverside Escapes
Sundarbans: The Sundarbans mangrove forest, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is best reached via Godkhali or Sonakhali, approximately 120-130 km from Kolkata by road, then followed by a boat into the delta. This is no chilling-by-the-beach vacation, but a typical safari in a tiger reserve. Accessing the core forest zone necessitates a permit that's arranged through the forest department or, more commonly, through the boat/lodge operator managing your tour. We’ll suggest you reserve it for at least two days since a single overnight stay will not give you sufficient time to explore beyond the immediate creeks.
Raichak & Falta: For those of you who are seeking something under two hours from the city, Raichak on the Hooghly and nearby Falta are the primary destinations we suggest to most of our clients. Riverside resorts here offer expansive river views, making them ideal for both a single-night stay or a long day trip with lunch and strolls by the water. It's the least demanding option on this list with no long drive or an early start.
Forest and Nature Getaways
Jhargram: Located about 170 km southwest of Kolkata, Jhargram is nestled within sal and teak woods with several tribal villages within a driving distance. The historic Jhargram Raj Palace offers a great option for a heritage stay; eco-resorts near the forest fringe are another. Winter is the time when the forest is at its greenest and most walkable.
Mukutmanipur: Mukutmanipur, built around the Kangsabati dam, is further away-around 230-260 km from Kolkata and we generally advise against squeezing it into a single overnight trip. The drive alone takes up a significant portion of a brief weekend, but the dam and reservoir views are worth the additional distance. If you're comfortable managing two nights, it can naturally pair up with a visit to Bishnupur on the way.
Heritage and Culture Trips
Shantiniketan: A must-visit if you’re looking for a peaceful and cultural getaway. Located about 160 km north of Kolkata, it is the university town of Rabindranath Tagore's and one of the more convenient heritage trips for a short weekend. The Visva-Bharati campus, the Kala Bhavana art complex and the weekly Sonajhuri Haat (when operational) are the typical destinations. Winter, especially around Poush Mela, is when the town is busiest. We’ll suggest making the bookings in advance if you're travelling in that week.
Bishnupur: Approximately 150 km away, Bishnupur is centred on its terracotta temple architecture and Baluchari saree craftsmanship. Half a day suffices to stroll around the primary temple clusters; for the remaining time, we suggest you visit the local handloom markets. If you have a third day to spare, this trip combines well with Mukutmanipur.
A Spiritual Weekend at Tarapith: Tarapith, a Shakti Peetha site, is located roughly 185-220 km from Kolkata depending on the route. It generally draws families and groups for a spiritual temple visit rather than a leisure recreational outing. The Tarapith Temple and the adjoining cremation ground (Mahashamshan) are the nearby primary sites. Weekends and festival days get crowded fast, so an early departure from Kolkata is more important here than in almost any location on this list.
Offbeat Pick-Baranti: Baranti, a quaint village in Purulia located around 230-265 km away, sits between Panchet and Biharinath Hills, featuring Muradi Lake at its heart. It remains less known than the beach circuit, which is precisely its appeal-nature hikes, bird-watching, and a truly tranquil lakeside experience. The distance can make it challenging for a strict two-day weekend, so we usually suggest incorporating this into a three-day weekend plan including Garh Panchkot or Joychandi Hill, both a quick drive from Baranti itself.
For a Long Weekend-Darjeeling & Kalimpong: Darjeeling and Kalimpong are roughly 600-650 km from Kolkata, involving an overnight train along with extra hours by road. These are appropriate for a long weekend when you have a few extra leaves lined up. But they're definitely worth the distance for the scenic mountains and tranquil tea estates they offer.

Best Time to Visit Gateways From Kolkata
The period from October to February offers the best all-round window-beaches are enjoyable in milder conditions, the forests are walkable, and Shantiniketan Poush Mela and Bishnupur temple visits are more pleasant. Summer months (April-June) are suitable for Sundarbans boat trips if you don't mind the heat. In the monsoon season (July-September), Jhargram and Baranti turn deep green, while coastal regions like Digha and Mandarmani can be riskier for swimming activities, and even the Sundarbans boat schedules may get disrupted.
Additional Expenses to Consider
In addition to the package cost, make sure you have some cushion for state highway tolls (particularly on the Kolkata-Digha and Kolkata-Baranti routes). Monument or park entry fees are generally not bundled into your package, and the Sundarbans permit fee might be charged separately from your boat service. Any tips for drivers and boatmen are all from your own pocket. Seafood at Digha, Mandarmani and Bakkhali is typically not included in your meal plan, and prices can add up quickly if you're ordering fresh fish by weight.
